Rhythmworks is MOVING

Hey so if you're reading this, the site hasn't gone down yet.

We're moving the site, it's not going to be anything spectactular the first little while but you'll still be able to hear everything you love here, there.

It's probably going to take a day or two to get everything up and running so please be patient.

In the new site, around a month from now, we'll be broadcasting a lot more interviews with artists you love, and ones you will love.

You can also look for a podcast launching around the first of January.

If there's anything else you would like to add please e-mail iain@rhythmworks.ca

If you read our site from outside of Canada, which is about half of you, and you want to write some blogs for us about the state of music in your land, email that email.

Of course, thank you for coming out and checking the site. We have some big things in the works and we want you to have a front row seat. Or front couch seat, or whatever, you get the point.

Yes one of America's favourite house producers has released another very smooth tune with the release of Raining today on beatport.

With titillating (tits lol) vocals, and a very nice beat structure this track says chill and party at the same time, depends on the volume perhaps. Adam K and Kaskade put together one very nice track but without Sunsun on the vocals we're not sure it would be the same. However, we are very pleased a Canadian (Adam K - Toronto), Sunsun (NYC) and Kaskade (Chicago) released this track. Under Ultra Records, or any label for that matter, as Canadians, invested in the growing scene of EDM we love to see a strictly North American track get released with world wide appeal. This is that. Long Live EDM.

Bring the Nosia

These Dutch lads are making some banging dance music. NOISIA (who took their name from the word ‘VISION’ inverted on an upside down VHS tape) are Nik Roos, Thijs de Vlieger and Martijn van Sonderen, hailing from the Netherlands. Influenced by an eclectic range of artists, from The Prodigy to James Brown, Miles Davis to Konflict, Noisia make music for DJs and dance-floors that is interesting enough to cross over from the clubs to your MP3 player.

2005 saw Noisia establish their own label, Vision Recordings to put out their drum&bass productions and collaborations and retain creative control of their music. Nik designs almost all of the artwork for the releases on their labels, and the guys love the challenges and rewards that come with running a label. Vision Recording’s biggest releases to date have been ‘The Tide’, ‘Exodus’ Feat. KRS One and ‘Stigma’. In 2007 they established Division, a non-D&B label for electro, breaks and house.

The Marseilles born producer/dj now living in Miami takes his next stop on the "Miamification Tour" to Ottawa tomorrow night. Sotto Nightclub is the venue, and some tickets are still available online.

You definitely need to get there early, to avoid any type of line-up. The line-up won't be moving either, only an idiot would leave a club when a talent like this is playing.

If you're not to familiar with Gervais, he's worked with some really big acts: Lenny Kravits, and others, but at the moment he's working as the producer for Mya's new album.
His residency's are at LIV and Space in Miami, and here's a hit you'll certainly hear tomorrow night.

So this is the setting.

I leave the greyhound station at 9:30 a/m after waiting 3 hours for my brother to wake up and tell me his address. A long walk later, I'm on Holmwood, near the Civic Center in Ottawa. Walking up the creaky stairs into bro-bro's new sublet.

I'm greeted by a haze of smoke billowing through the entrance into an equally creaky living room and the contagious sound that is Chromeo. More specifically, Mercury Tears, I was instantly hooked. I've been a "Chromeo" ever since. We spent that day listening to Chromeo and watching Arrested Development, simultaneously.

Some 5 years later, Chromeo has shaken any non believers and proclaimed themselves to the world as some of the most talented musicians out.

I guess that's the foreword?

Chromeo is set to release their new video for "Hot Mess" and today, via their website, they released behind the scenes pictures. OO Sexy Mamacita's, can't wait! Here's the link!

Last night A-Quack rather Ducksauce, on twitter, posted that the amazing Barbra Streisand video is now available for FREEE, ALLLL WEEEEK on Itunes. So naturally being huge A-Trak and Armand Van Helden fans we rushed right over...Then reality checked in to the room beside us, knocked on our door, and told us that the video is only available in the U.S... Big time :(

New Chromeo video coming soon!

NEW CUT COPY IN THE WORKS

There are a lot of great Australians, so picking a favourite is hard, but we really like Cut Copy. Their second album "In Ghost Colours" (they spell it right to) was amazing!
Pretty solid the whole way through so we're looking forward to what they're going to bring to the table this time around.

The release date is February 8th of 2011.

Apparently the group recorded the album in an abandoned warehouse, so they used generators, had very little heat and no internet. It's a very raw sounding album supposedly, but that's all we know so far. When we get a preview we'll be sure to link it up to you. Until then you'll have to do with this smasher off IGC. "Hearts On Fire" probably our favourite track from them, we used to bump this on our morning show a few years back. Shout out to our former Music Director, now Virgin Ottawa Traffic Announcer Sean Tansey for listening to us.

Adam Sheridan - TIMEZONE

Just got a little off topic.. Filo and Peri were featured on the Anniversary podcast which is a whopping 3 days long, everyone is on it, it's crazy. Ultimate gym mix lol, forever. There were a few tracks from the new Best Dance Music Nation, Egypt, and even featured a remix from Fady and Mina on the track Sea Wind from Tamerlan and DJ ONS. (We interviewed them last week. Check the tags on the post for that) This was of course featured directly after F & P 's hour set for the show and on the mix of another one of Egypt's established artists Phillipe El Sisi.

Afrojack

So it's pretty sweet, I mean this is live, recorded on a phone. This is a glimpse of the new afrojack track.

Afrojack debuted on the DJ MAG TOP 100 this year at number 19. Debuted at 19, some people even had him going higher..Anyway that's good enough for the second highest debut this year behind Dash Berlin. People that debut that high are pretty talented considering Avicii came in somewhere in the 40's while Wolfgang Gartner came in at number 100. That says a lot, but still, don't get it twisted Afrojack is well, hear it.

The group known as OceanLab, comprised of Above and Beyond and Gareth Emery released the video for 'On A Good Day" last month. It's out as of today on the Anjuna Records beatport page. Anjuna specializes in trance and just the other day another release hit the wire, "Aruna & Mark Eteson - Let Go."
Back to the big release "On A Good Day." Since OceanLab is a collaboration of British DJ's it surprised us a little bit that the video is filmed in Detroit. The video is meant to help bring publicity to the work of the people of Detroit as they try to rebuild their somewhat broken city. It definitely did that, check the write up in Britain's "Guardian."
Back in May we had the chance to speak with a DJ based in Detroit and he felt optimistic that a turn around is beginning to happen. Citing that the exodus of people leaving the city has finished, and the people are starting to rebuild delapadated parts of the city. Works for us, OceanLab gets our vote for the good smaritan award. :)

We have to say it really is something else. Breakbeat and Dubstep to Electro House, this comp has it all. Really in love with how he takes elements of dubstep and brings them to house and vice versa. Fady & Mina: IntervieW CRUSHING NEW TRACK AVIATION!

Recently we posted a video for the Egyptian duo Fady and Mina's new uplifting trance track Aviation. Out December 10th on Omerta Records.

We loved the track and are obviously inclined to seek the views of trance musicians half a world away. Based in Egypt, we corresponded with the duo and asked them some questions about their music and the evolving sound of Egypt.

Egypt was recently voted Best Dance Nation at the Ibibiza DJ Awards.

Here's the interview:

What are your full names? 

 Fady Hany Berty,  Mina Alaa Ghabbour

   Recently at the Ibiza DJ awards Egypt was voted Dance Nation of the  Year (2010). How do you guys think Egypt established itself  as one of the biggest countries on the EDM stage?   

----We think Egypt now is on the right track hitting the EDM scene with  top quality artists, and top releases. We think Aly & Fila are one of  the main reasons why EDM has taken its current shape in Egypt,  followed by the amazing Philippe el Sisi. Together with the successful  label Future Sound of Egypt, invading the trance scene worldwide and  becoming one of the most powerful labels in the scene in a very short  time. Also the people have been introduced to the clubbing culture  which is comparatively new for us to Europe and America, but we think  we are going straight forward to the top.   

Can you guys describe the EDM scene in Egypt? Is it the mainstream? 

 ----The EDM scene in Egypt is a little more of a housy one, trance  listeners are so many, but clubs and events are mainly running on  house and commercial stuff, nevertheless people now are getting more  familiar with trance, mainly uplifting.  For the EDM in Egypt, it's not the mainstream, but it's growing  amazingly with a high rate, especially among youth.   

Is the trance scene the biggest part of EDM in Egypt? Over in North  America we’re flooded with house music, though some of us really  like, trance just isn’t as big.

   ----We think it's pretty the same here, the same flood of house music is  affecting us, though you have so many trance listeners, and yet still  growing in population don't worry, we think it's coming very soon!! 

 How do you guys make music together, more in depth, how are production  duties assigned? Or do you guys go step for step together the whole way?

   ----Sitting in the studio, with hot coffee, fresh ears, and here we  gooo!!! :-) Actually no duties are assigned, we are more like brothers before the  music thing, we share the music together, same way goes with the  production, brainstorming comes first, track ideas begin to evolve, at  this point we begin implementing. We both sit in the studio, opening  the sequencer, selecting sounds and sampling others, having the  arrangement, the mixdown and everything going like we love to do it. So it's not about duties, also communication technology is amazing,  sometimes we work online!!!   

How many hours a day would you say you’re involved with music?  Headphones on all day or..?   

----24/7:-D   

What’s going on with you guys right now, potential tour dates, new  productions?
We recently heard “Aviation” and thought it was just  devastatingly good, what do you guys have coming? 

 ----Well, touring is not our target now, but definitely this is going to  happen in the near future, so we are now focusing on production.  Raising our mix quality and always work on that, we have a lot of  projects currently in the studio, mainly uplifting trance as we are,  and some film scoring stuff. There are also a lot of contacts and  actual collabs going with some well-known names in the scene, so stay  tuned coz we are still starting and the bigger is yet to come!!!!

DJ MAG TOP 100 POLL CLOSES AT MIDNIGHT TONIGHT

BIG DAY/NIGHT

This is your final chance to have a say (albeit a very small one) in who takes home the coveted and at times controversial #1 spot on the DJ Mag Top 100 Poll. CLick the title link for directions.

Will it be Armin Van Buuren for the third time in a row? Will Tiesto rise to the occasion?

Personally, we think, well we don't know what to think, the list is pretty saturated with marketing campaigns. Every artists' agents and management have been signing in to their twitter accounts to say "Vote (insert DJ name here) for the DJ Mag Top 100, polls close soon!" Which continues our belief that it's more of a price list, but it is fan voted, so vote away, it might not be around much longer.

Back to who we think will win, because, our short sighted view of the system aside, we like every (almost) artist on the list.

So here is our list:

1. Deadmau5: He DJ'd the VMA's and if there is anyone who likes voting for things online, it's people watching award shows at home, guilty. He's also Canadian.

2. Armin Van Buuren: because he dropped "Mirage" two weeks before voting ended.

3. Tiesto: He invaded N.A markets this year, a la David Guetta, but still maintains his originality, which doesn't mean shit to the hardcores, but hey, they probably didn't vote anyway.

4. Sander Van Doorn: He's amazing, everyone of the biggest DJ's in the world seems to endorse his sound, see The XX - Intro (SVD RMX)

5. Above and Beyond: Banger Alert, as always

6. Paul Van Dyk: Legend.

7. Ferry Corsten: Once Upon A Night is still super huge.

8. Can the Swedish House Mafia get a vote? No? Okay

9. Markus Schulz: Still draws in the crowds, still resident in Ibiza.

10. Marcus Bits: one day, seriously.....

We also have Lange breaking into the Top 25.

We're pretty sure the poll crashed tonight, maybe some hardcore electro hackers, maybe a volume crash. Either way, the announcements come at The Winter Music Conference in Miami at the International Dance Music Awards.

Released just moments ago Wiz Khalifa of the Kush and Oranje Juice mixtape will take his Waken Baken Tour(lol) to Ritual Nightclub in Ottawa, Ontario.

Cudi, B.O.B, Wiz Khalifa pretty much round out the best up and coming acts in hip hop in this past year, o.k well the first two are pretty mainstream. Remember when Cudi started?

Anyway, Wiz is definitely our house favourite in the category of break out hip hop artist. I mean he's been doing it awhile, but he just continues to rise. Have you heard The Thrill or the crazy joint with Demi Lovato? We don't tip Demi Lovato too much here, so you know it has to be sick.

Honestly though, don't sleep on going to his show in Ottawa, Toronto weekend after next. It's going to get kushy.. September 25th at Capital City Music Hall in Ottawa, but don't worry if Toronto is closer he plays at Sound Academy one day later. Tickets are already on sale in Toronto, and go on sale in Ottawa tomorrow at 3p.m!

Here's his latest release "Damn it Feels Good To Be A Taylor" classic remake of "Damn It Feels Good To Be A Gangsta." We heard it got banned from MTV to! LOL, Bet they didn't even bother sending it in!

Armin Van Buuren's "Mirage" debuted on all major distributors catalogue list today.

Regardless of what anyone thinks of this evolving dance music scene and the merge into straight up "Pop" music, this album is going to get major spins in nightclubs across the globe.

Of course, Armin and his amazing marketing team release the album as voting for the DJ Mag Top 100 poll takes place.

Are people going to think it's too popish because he releases a song like Youtopia with Owl City's Adam Young? Probably, but he's probably going to go number 1 again ahead of Tiesto.. Lets face the facts, well, facebook facts, the number of people who "Like" Armin Van Buuren is staggering compared to a competitor like Sander Van Doorn. People are saying Deadmau5 might do it, SVD might do it. We're going to be very un-patriotic and set-up an internet dialer for Sander.

Anyway, these songs still make people want to dance, and that's the important thing.

We give the album a Gold Star, in between Platinum, and Kryptonite. Kryptonite is pretty much impossible to get, but you can get Kryptonite for a particular track.

In the case of Mirage, we give The Light Between Us with Christian Burns, top grade Kryptonite - Hear

Sander Van Doorn – Crazy New Track Update!

Last week we posted the new single Daddyrock from dutch super maestro Sander Van Doorn. We originally wanted to post The XX – Intro (Sander Van Doorn Bootleg) because a lot of the world's biggest DJ's were opening their sets with it, Tiesto, Axwell, etc... We found the track today, after listening to just Tiesto's live set at Mysteryland. Probably isn't a bootleg now that Sander has it on his youtube channel sandervandoorntv.

As a double dose of The XX, they won Britain's prestigious Mercury Prize for Album of the Year tonight, beating out Paul Weller and Mumford & Sons to name a few.

So Kanye West went all bezerker apologies on his twitter account on the weekend (We were partying).

The tweetologies were in reference to Kanye punk'n Swift Beatz at the VMA's almost a year ago...Almost a year ago.

One tweet really stuck out for us, as it hinted at a major whole-notha-levol Kanye West bigger than life apology, by song?

"I wrote a song for Taylor Swift that's so beautiful and I want her to have it. If she won't take it then I'll perform it for her"

YEA

West hasn't said he's going to perform it at this weekends VMA's, but that's what our money is on. We're big fans, and he's easy to write about, big fan of Swift Beatz to.

There's a new Sander Van Doorn track out, called "The XX - Intro (Sander Van Doorn Bootleg)" and it's lighting up the twitter accounts of some of the world's biggest DJs. Tiesto, Axwell, and MR. SVD himself. The only link we found is from Tiesto's set this weekend at Mysterylan, and dude opened with it!
It hasn't been leaked online(to our knowledge, which really, ain't that great) anyway, Sander has a new tune out coming tonight at midnight, or tomorrow, whatever way you look at it, like 10 minutes from now. It's called "Daddyrock" and it's pretty nice. The preview has been out on Youtube all month almost. Hear's the link

Recently we caught up with Auryn music to get some fresh new releases after we stumbled upon their myspace page. (Click the title for the link)
